Networking and Capacity Building Workshop on \"Regional Trade Issues\"

Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) conducted a "Networking and Capacity Building Workshop" on "Regional Trade Issues" for Economic Journalists and Business Reporters of Bangladesh, on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the 4th floor Conference Hall of the Chamber.

About 40 business reporters and economic journalists of the leading major print and electronic media participated at the workshop. Dr. Mostofa Abid Khan, Director – Programme, Research and Policy Advocacy was the resource person.

This workshop was a part of an initiative supported by the Asia Foundation to build and support a network of economic journalists/business reporters in Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal sub-region of South Asia. The technical, economic and legal aspects of bottlenecks of sub-regional trade, in terms of non-tariff and para-tariff barriers, other trade impediments, bilateral and regional trade agreements, various trade-restrictive practices at the borders, and cross-cutting issues, such as, poor infrastructure, supply side limitations, poor ability to promote products, and so forth were discussed at the workshop.

The methodology and objective of developing the media network in the sub-region was also explained by the Chamber’s Secretary, Mr. Shaquib Quoreshi. A better understanding on the regional trade issues and the role of the media in objective reporting on trade issues and resulting contribution to continued advocacy for promoting regional trade was achieved as the outcome of the workshop.
