Essential Drugs Company Limited (EDCL)) is a state owned pharmaceuticals company in Bangladesh. In 1962, it was functioning under the central Government in the name of Government Pharmaceuticals Laboratory (GPL) and renamed as Pharmaceuticals Production Unit (PPU) in 1979. It was registered as a public limited company under the Companies Act, 1994. It was established in 1983 with the main objective to supply these products inside the country for public health and export. The company has been supplying essential drugs to the Government hospitals, civil surgeon’s offices, health institutions of Government, non-Government and international organizations (non-profit makings) like UNICEF, WHO, ICDDRB etc. Its manpower is more than 2,500.
